Major League Sports, Baseball and Soccer in Las Vegas

By Colleen Smith

Sports fans in Sin City can do far more than hang out in a casino sports book to catch a game. Even though there are no big league sports in Las Vegas, you can find plenty of sports locations in the area that offer visitors the chance to get out there to cheer for your fave team or player. There's nothing like seeing live sports, and there are some great venues for professional level sports action in Vegas.

Auto Racing

The Las Vegas Motor Speedway is probably one of the premier auto racing facilities in the United States, giving local race fans the opportunity to see big league sports in Las Vegas with superstars of racing. NASCAR races at the track each year with local heroes Kurt and Kyle Busch coming home to take on other top drivers such as Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards. The IndyCar Series ends their year at the speedway, and the NHRA holds annual races at the quarter-mile drag strip. Sprint automobile and altered racing takes place on a regular basis at the facility's dirt track.

Baseball

While Las Vegas has been a whispered about destination for a major league baseball team, the next thing to major league baseball in Las Vegas came when the Oakland Athletics played the early part of their season at Cashman Field in 1996. Cashman Field is sometimes the home of the Sin City 51s, the Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Fans have also had the opportunity to view championship baseball in Las Vegas, as Cashman Field has hosted the Triple-A World Series.

Las Vegas Soccer

Soccer in Las Vegas is becoming more popular, as it is being welcomed by an increasing multicultural population. Cashman Field has hosted one or two Major League Soccer exhibition games and global matches, and Las Vegas has been a whispered about site for future MLS expansion. Fans of soccer in Las Vegas who would like to root for their local team can support the Las Vegas Strikers, a professional team that plays in the National Premier Soccer League.

Football

While worries about gambling has kept the NFL from Vegas, the city has been home to one or two professional football organizations through the past including groups in the XFL and USFL. As of now, the Las Vegas Locomotive play in the United Football League, where they won the league championship in 2009 and 2010. Past NFL players on the Locomotive's line-up include Brian Brohm and Samie Parker.
