Like in any industry, there are a number of myths we've been brought to believe about the speaking industry. Now it is time to debunk some of those false ways of thinking and false bits of information. Common myths hurt any speaking career because they function as obstacles for a developing and flourishing business.
People often question me the same types of questions over and over - exactly how to make more cash with speaking or how to get reservations for speaking. What these individuals do not necessarily understand is that the answers to all of these questions come when they deal with the three myths.
A common myth that individuals who are in a speaking career believe is that 'money is bad.' As a result, these speakers fundamentally choose low paying speaking engagements, or even worse yet perform for free because it is all the income they think they can achieve. These are frequently the same folks asking me how to get bookings for speaking. Do not get me wrong. I'm not talking about the people who book free speaking gigs as leverage to get their foot in the door. I'm not speaking about people who are constructing credibility and notoriety in their niche as an expert. I'm talking about the people who seem to think that money will eventually come in spite of not ever being paid a dime!
Here's what I realized. When I got serious about learning how to make money with speaking, I decided to get "myself" out of the way. Once I altered my old ways of thinking about my speaking career, I found there were folks who were prepared to spend me a load of cash to speak.
The 2nd most typical myth in speaking I notice is that motivation is all you need. Completely wrong! I have an acronym that I teach people - MDPYM (Motivation does NOT Pay Your Mortgage). I learned early in my speaking career that being motivated did not mean I would make money. Now, I teach people to overcome 'poverty thinking' mindset. In fact, I teach the people I mentor to get motivated by discovering different techniques to get people to give them money.
The last speaking belief I hear most often is that it takes hard work to become rich. I do not really believe that! My Dad was a great man and was the hardest working man I've ever known in my life, but he never made more than $29,000 annually. He was the model of hard work, but just because he worked hard does not mean he became financially rich.
A good number of folks think it is about working 'smart,' but I do not think this either. I believe it is about working RIGHT! The truth is that if you are not working RIGHT, first, then it does not matter how hard or smart you work. Target your attention and energy on designing the RIGHT brochure, creating the RIGHT powerpoint presentation, writing the RIGHT book, audio or DVD title, creating the RIGHT positioning and RIGHT branding, etc.
The above three myths may seem simple, almost like they are "not a big deal" but let me assure you that nothing could be further from the truth. They are a big deal; it is really crucial for you to reject these myths! Shift your pondering to stop believing these 3 myths! You can do it - the time is Now!
