Boost Your Horse Riding Success Via Mind Reprogramming

By Heather Toms

There is a secret to turning into a superior rider without needing to go through hours and hours of lessons: you can make yourself a far better rider by devoting some part of the time spent on lessons to train yourself mentally. I used this secret to meet my ambition of riding in International Events.

I did it this way. I found a copy of the book Psychocybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. It is a book that pretty much changed my life. I learned from Maltz's book about the way that the human subconscious can help in achievement. Maltz made it clear that not withstanding popular belief, the conscious part of the mind does not permanently influence the quality or effectiveness of human actions. There is no doubt that exercise of strong will power and faithful determination can achieve short term success , but for wining to become a habit, it's the unconscious mind that must definitely be allowed to rule.

This is essentially because of the way the unconscious mind works towards goal realization. The subconscious isn't judgmental; it is not concerned with negative or positive aspects. It is concerned with achieving goals, and it waits for you to point it at the next one. When you do that, your subconscious starts its relentless work: edging you closer to realization.

You have to handle your subconscious with total care, because it picks up on cues you didn't intend it to. For example, if you keep speaking to pals and kin about how much of a frightened wreck you become at events, your subconscious mind takes that for a goal. The final result, you mess up every time.

You need to take advantage of the fact that the subconscious cannot distinguish between fact and fiction. Whether or not it is false, by telling friends and relations that you love events and the challenge they pose, your subconscious mind locks in on that and makes it a goal. You'll soon start to love events. It is inevitable as you have programmed a particularly powerful subconscious that won't be denied.

What are the best ways to intentionally use your subconscious to raise yourself up, there are two methods: visualisation and self-talk.

Visualization

Visualisation (seeing things as mental images) works best when it is clear. You can make it vivid by making a deliberate effort to fill in as many details as feasible and by getting your senses, including emotion, involved.

- Open your ears to the rhythm made by the footfalls of your pony.

- Open your nose to the odour of unpolluted air after it rains in summer.

- Reinforce your touch perception so that you can better feel the way the reins in your hands weigh.

- Open your eyes to your horse's markings, as well as to your own attire.

- Open your mouth just a bit and get a little taste of the salt in the sweat that drips down from your brows.

- Open your heart and invoke your feelings. Feel your own quietness and poise while entering the ring.

SELF-TALK

One effective way to programme the subconscious is to take care about the words emanating from your mouth.

Positively claim your goals,

Assert your ambitions so that it appears that you are already in possession of the qualities you have got a desire to accomplish.

Continue to tell yourself 'I love events', even if you're not being quite truthful, your subconscious mind will not be able to distinguish. Simply fake it and you'll definately make it, something that I successfully did myself.
